Fartuun Adan is a winner of the 2013 International Women of Courage Award.

She is the Executive Director of Elman Peace and Human Rights Centre, an NGO based in Somalia. The organisation she leads works in the areas of Human Rights, Peace Building, Development, Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Child Soldiers. The organisation’s headquarters is located in Mogadishu, Somalia, where she established the first rape crisis centre. Fartuun works actively towards gender justice and prevention of gender based violence.

Women’s rights have reached all corners.

Not to interrupt the circlejerk but both sides are pretty bad and it’s worth actually researching the region to understand what led to where it is now.

Wait wait, what makes you think I haven’t researched and that I’m not aware and educated on the occupation and how it came to be in the first place?

And oh please, “both sides are pretty bad”, it’s called self defense. Palestine has never come close to having the weaponry or support that Israel has to be considered a threat to them lol.

But to be fair to Israel…. they didn’t start the war.

Huh? The Palestinians welcomed the Jews into their land, they were sympathetic and wanted to help.

They didn’t know it would lead to them being pushed out of their homes and crammed into small areas of land with shitty living conditions, cut off from each other by walls and check points and armed soldiers.

Who do you think started it all? I’m intrigued.. and I find it interesting you describe it as a war.

Poverty tourism is only the most recent form of the evolution of the particular fascination (stand well back, but let us peer at you, curiously) that the upper classes have with the lower. The current mutation of poverty tourism includes a well meaning, upper/middle class, first world people, who are for whatever reason turned onto going to Africa (and it’s always Africa, isn’t it) to learn about how the starving children that show up on their TVs and their destitute parents live.

It’s Women’s International Day and what better way to spend this day than paying a tribute to the courage of women who are survivors of rape globally.
This issue has hit even closer to home with stories about Somali women being victims in our Motherland. Given the recent worrying story of an alleged rape victim who has been sentenced to one year prison in Mogadishu alongside her husband and the journalist who interviewed her, I think it is relevant and an absolute must for me to speak up on their behalf.
